Swedish Massage
Deep Tissue Massage
Swedish Massage in Eugene, Oregon

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is one of the most widely recognized and commonly requested massage techniques. It incorporates long, flowing strokes, gentle circular movements, and firm kneading to relax the muscles and increase oxygen flow throughout the body. By enhancing the circulation of both blood and lymph, Swedish massage supports the natural cleansing and nourishment of soft tissues—including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and skin.

This style of massage is ideal for easing muscle tension, relieving pain, improving flexibility, and promoting a deep sense of relaxation and well-being. To ensure smooth, fluid movements and reduce friction, a light lotion or massage oil is typically used.

A Swedish massage is generally offered as a full-body session but can be customized to focus on specific areas needing extra attention. It’s an excellent choice for those new to massage, anyone experiencing stress, or individuals simply looking to unwind and restore balance.

Research from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine—reported by The New York Times—showed that participants receiving a 45-minute Swedish massage experienced significant reductions in the stress hormone cortisol and in arginine vasopressin, a hormone associated with increased stress levels. The study also noted increases in lymphocytes, the white blood cells that support immune function, suggesting that Swedish massage may help strengthen the body’s natural defenses.

Experience the restorative benefits of Swedish massage and support your overall relaxation, health, and wellness.

Deep Tissue Massage in Eugene, Oregon

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a focused, therapeutic technique designed to address specific areas of tension, injury, and chronic discomfort. By working deeply into the muscles, connective tissues, and areas surrounding the joints, this modality helps reduce pain, improve circulation, and diminish the buildup of scar tissue. It is especially beneficial for long-standing tension, such as stiff necks, low back pain, hip tightness, and sore shoulders.

While some techniques may feel similar to Swedish massage, deep tissue work involves slower movements and more concentrated pressure. These techniques help break down adhesions—tight bands of tissue often referred to as “knots”—which can restrict movement, diminish circulation, and contribute to inflammation and pain.

Deep tissue massage works by gently and deliberately releasing these adhesions, allowing the muscles to regain mobility and ease. Your therapist may use sustained pressure, direct compression, or cross-fiber friction to support the natural healing process and restore balance within the tissues.

Because this type of massage targets deeper layers of muscle, it is normal to experience moments of discomfort or tenderness during the session, as well as mild soreness afterward. Open communication is encouraged—let your therapist know if you need more or less pressure so the work remains effective yet comfortable. Staying well-hydrated after your session is also important, as it supports the body’s detoxification process and can help reduce post-massage soreness.

Deep tissue techniques can be incorporated into a full-body session or applied to specific areas that need focused attention. This modality also blends well with other techniques to create a personalized and restorative therapeutic experience.

Asian Bodywork
Asian Bodywork in Eugene, Oregon

Asian Bodywork

Asian Bodywork is a traditional healing modality rooted in the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). At the heart of TCM is the understanding that the body is sustained by a vital life force known as Qi, which flows through an interconnected network of pathways called meridians. When Qi moves smoothly and abundantly, it supports vitality, balanced health, and a deep sense of well-being. When this flow becomes disrupted—either through stagnation or excess—discomfort, tension, or various imbalances may arise.

Asian Bodywork helps restore harmony and balance by gently stimulating the flow of Qi. Through rhythmic, circular pressure along the meridians and focused work on specific acupressure points, this treatment encourages energetic alignment and supports the body’s natural healing processes. The massage is applied to the entire body, from head to toe, offering a deeply relaxing yet revitalizing experience. It can be used for a wide range of concerns, from localized pain to digestive issues, or simply to enhance overall vitality.

Many clients experience a pleasant sense of warmth or gentle “buzzing” as circulation and energy flow improve. Increased blood flow nourishes muscles, ligaments, and joints with fresh oxygen, helping to flush out accumulated waste products. This leaves the tissues relaxed, replenished, and more mobile. Balanced Qi supports the functioning of all organs, promotes mental clarity, and encourages a profound sense of relaxation throughout the body.

Asian Bodywork can be tailored to address both acute and chronic concerns—such as pain, tension, headaches, or digestive disharmonies—as well as for general wellness and preventative care. Sessions are available in 60- or 90-minute appointments and may be combined with other therapeutic modalities to create a fully personalized healing experience.

Core Objectives and Benefits

The primary goal of prenatal massage is to support a healthier, more comfortable pregnancy journey. Key benefits include:

  • Relief from Physical Discomfort. Targeting areas commonly strained by pregnancy, such as the lower back, hips, neck, and shoulders.

  • Reduced Swelling (Edema). Stimulating circulation to help alleviate swelling in the hands, feet, and ankles.

The Therapeutic Experience

Positioning and Safety. Client safety and comfort are paramount. The massage is typically performed with the client in a side-lying position, supported by soft, specialized cushions and pillows (such as a full-body pregnancy bolster system). This positioning ensures that there is no undue pressure on the abdomen or obstruction of circulation, making the experience deeply relaxing and secure.

  • Long, Calming Strokes (Effleurage). To soothe the nervous system and increase blood flow.

  • Gentle Kneading (Petrissage). To relieve muscle knots and tension in the back, glutes, and legs.

  • Careful Joint Mobilization. To improve hip and pelvic alignment and ease sciatica discomfort.

Recommended Timing. Prenatal massage is generally recommended after the first trimester (post-12 weeks) and can be enjoyed safely and beneficially up until the due date. Consultation with a healthcare provider is always encouraged.

Gua Sha
Gua Sha in Eugene, Oregon

Gua Sha: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Wellness

Gua Sha is a traditional East Asian healing technique that involves gently stroking the skin with a smooth-edged tool, typically made from materials like jade, rose quartz, or horn. This practice, whose name literally translates to "scraping" (gua) "sha" (petechiae or transient therapeutic redness), is designed to intentionally create light surface friction.

How Gua Sha Works

The primary mechanism of Gua Sha is to stimulate microcirculation and promote lymphatic drainage. By applying firm but comfortable pressure, the therapist encourages the movement of stagnant blood, fluids, and metabolic waste away from the tissues. This process releases muscle tension, improves blood flow to the area, and can significantly reduce inflammation and discomfort.

Key Benefits

Gua Sha therapy offers a wide array of therapeutic benefits, making it an excellent addition to any wellness routine:

  • Pain Relief. Effective for chronic pain, tension headaches, neck stiffness, and back discomfort.

  • Reduced Inflammation. Helps the body clear pathways, which is particularly beneficial for conditions like perimenopausal symptoms and general muscle soreness.

  • Improved Circulation. Enhances the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to muscle and skin tissue, promoting healing and revitalization.

  • Facial Rejuvenation. When applied to the face, it can help de-puff, sculpt facial contours, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and create a healthy glow by promoting detoxification.

At Flourish, our certified practitioners tailor the Gua Sha treatment to your specific needs, focusing on areas of tension or inflammation to restore balance and vitality. Add the experience of this time-honored technique to your session, and unlock a deeper state of relaxation and somatic well-being.

Traditional Cupping
Cupping Therapy in Eugene, Oregon

Traditional Cupping Therapy

Cupping is an ancient form of alternative medicine that has been practiced across various cultures, most notably in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves placing specialized cups—made of glass, plastic, or silicone—on the skin to create a vacuum, or pulling action. This pulling gently lifts the skin, fascia, and underlying muscle tissue into the cup. This therapy can be easily added to any massage modality.

How It Works

The therapeutic effect of cupping is achieved through decompression. By pulling the tissue upward, cupping helps to:

  • Promote Circulation. The negative pressure draws blood flow to the treated area, flushing out toxins, stagnant blood, and metabolic waste, while encouraging the delivery of oxygen and nutrient-rich blood.

  • Relieve Muscle Tension and Pain. It is highly effective for loosening tight muscles, easing stiffness, and alleviating pain associated with knots and trigger points.

  • Facilitate Healing. By breaking up scar tissue and adhesions, cupping can help improve range of motion and accelerate the body's natural healing processes.

The Experience

During a session, the therapist may use a small flame (fire cupping) or a manual pump to create the vacuum before placing the cups. The client will feel a tight, pulling sensation as the cup is applied. The cups are typically left in place for five to fifteen minutes. A common side effect is the appearance of circular marks or bruises (petechiae) on the skin where the cups were placed; these are a sign of increased blood flow and typically dissipate within a few days.

Cupping is often integrated into massage therapy or used as a standalone treatment to address issues ranging from chronic pain and muscle soreness to respiratory conditions and digestive complaints.
